First of all, Western Gardens has an amazing selection of seeds. I loved browsing through and finding seeds that are from here in Utah and recommended for Utah growing. It makes me feel more confident in my planting!
10 Veggies to Plant Now to Save Money Later:
- Cucumbers (Marketmore, Straight Eight, and Lemon)
- Tomatoes (Big Beef and cherry)
- Bell Peppers (Red, Yellow, and Green)
- Pink Banana Jumbo Squash
- Spaghetti Squash
- Crookneck Summer Squash
- Zucchini Black Beauty Summer Squash
- Onions
- Pumpkins (Jack Be Little, Connecticut Field, Dills Atlantic Giant)
- Carrots
I’ve picked up a few different varieties of veggies because this year I’m keeping track of which grow best and which my family likes best. I also decided to save money by starting most of my plants from seed.
I’ve always had the best luck with my garden when I’ve used plant starts, so I’m excited to see how my seeds do! They should grow well in their starters and transplant perfectly into the garden.
You may be wondering why I have pumpkins included in my list of 10 plants to plant now to save money later, let me tell you…pumpkins add up fast in price come September/October/November. With 7 children who all want to carve their own pumpkin (and me…who wants them all over the place for decoration!), we end up buying a lot of pumpkins.
I’m excited to see how the different sizes do and of all the seeds I’ve planted, and my children are most excited to see the pumpkins sprouting! Especially the giant pumpkins, they’re already claiming how many they get.
This year, I purchased tomato and onion plant starts and planted seeds for everything else.
I picked up two Jiffy Peat Pellet seed starter kits at Western Gardens and got to work. I am happy to report that they’re incredibly easy to use (just follow the directions on the box) and that on their one week “birthday” my plants look awesome! I can’t wait to get them in the garden.
My favorite veggie would have to be cucumbers. They’re a great snack and my kids love them! Do you have a favorite vegetable you look forward to planting each year? Tell me in the comments below!
